(As we watched someone milking a cow on TV):
Mommy, what is he DOING?! Is he squeezing the pee-pee out?
LOL!
Anne Lamott: Traveling Mercies : Some Thoughts on Faith
Obviously, I'm on a religious journey kick (see below). I expect Lamott's exploration of her journey towards faith will be just as moving and laugh-out-loud funny as "Operating Instructions".
Kerry M. Olitzky: Jewish Ritual: A Brief Introduction For Christians
For anyone who has ever been curious about different Jewish customs, where they come from and their historical and spiritual significance, this is the book for you. (*****)
Ruth Irene Garrett: Crossing Over: One Woman's Escape from Amish Life
(***)
Don Freeman: Corduroy (Picture Puffins)
A childhood favorite of mine, I'm enjoying sharing this very sweet story with the Shookie now. (****)
Ludwig Bemelmans: Madeline
The Shookie is completely enamored with Mad-e-line, as he says it. A true classic. (****)
JEAN DE BRUNHOFF: The Story of Babar (Babar Books (Random House))
The Babar books were some of my favorite as a child, and I'm pleased that the Shookie has also taken an interest in them as well. (****)
Nancy Wainer Cohen: Silent Knife : Cesarean Prevention and Vaginal Birth after Cesarean (VBAC)
Considered by many to be the "VBAC Bible", this is THE book for anyone who has had a C-section and wondered whether it was the right decision, or anyone who is hoping to avoid a repeat C-section., and wondering if it is possible.
SHEILA KITZINGER: The Complete Book of Pregnancy and Childbirth (Revised)
A GREAT alternative to the other "this is what's happening to you/your baby this month" books out there. A more "topical" book, the pictures alone make it worth a look-see.
Ina May Gaskin: Spiritual Midwifery
VERY "hippy" in it's tone, this book is not for everyone. But, if you're looking for postive, exciting, earthy birth stories, this is the best book out there. It will be firmly planted by my nightstand next time I'm pg as my "I know I can! I know I can!" birth mantra.
Pam England: Birthing from Within: An Extra-Ordinary Guide to Childbirth Preparation
A little over-the-top for the mainstream, but still an excellent resource in helping women to address their thoughts, fears and expectations about birth.
Henci Goer: The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth
An informed decision is always the right decision, and this book is chock-full of great information, with the studies and statistics to back it up.
Penny Simkin: The Birth Partner, Second Edition
I had the priviledge of doing my Doula Training with Penny, and it was one of the best experiences of my life. This is a MUST read for anyone who is going to support a woman in labor, whether as a husband, partner, friend or doula. I give it to all my pg friends husbands, and make them promise to read it. =)
